DETROIT - "Here's my detail," says Wendell Harrison, describing his personal manifesto. "People can helper themselves. You can do it yourself rather than wait for somebody else to do it for you. That's been my whole way of life. I don't make a lot of money, but at least I'm in control of what I do."

Harrison, a Detroit-born sense saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, entrepreneur and educator, is celebrating the unveil of "It's About Damn Time," his first CD in seven years. At 68, he's best known as a co topple over of Tribe, the legendary Detroit jazz collective that came together in the early '70s in a defensive-willed act of African-American self-determination, connecting the dots between music, communal justice and community building.

Not to be anxious, though, there are lots of other reasonably safe places to stash a retirement cache , and many of them generate a lot more cash than CDs or treasuries, which may pay 2 or 3 percent interest to those willing to tie up their money for at least 10 years. CDs and treasuries with shorter maturities might pay a percent or two, perhaps less.
